Harka-Dip

Harka-Dip is a general purpose pigeon dip to promote good plumage hygiene and to treat and prevent infection from ectoparasites - lice, flies and mites.

Instructions for Use:

Simply dilute the contents of the bottle into 9 litres (2 gallons) of warm water, hold the bird by the wings and completely immerse up to the head; ruffle the feathers to allow the solution to penetrate, then drain the bird and gently squeeze out the feathers. Return the bird to the perch to enable plumage to dry.

The operation should only take around 20 seconds.

Harka-Dip removes natural water proofing from the feathers so do not allow birds to fly for one day after dipping.

Do not allow birds to fly for seven days during rain.

Hara-Dip contains 0.1% w/v Cypermethrin.

**Hexamitiasis is an intestinal disease of pigeons that is associated with muco-aqueous, or even bloody, faeces:

  • Pathogen:
The flagellate, Hexamita columbaeoccurs in pigeon flocks mainly in the summer and autumn months. It primarily colonises the rectum. Especially susceptible are newly weaned squabs, whose resistance is still low. Infected adult pigeons do not normally show visible signs of the disease, but can excrete the pathogen in large quantities in their droppings (chronic carriers). The incubation period is 4-5 days.
  • Symptoms of the disease:
Acute catarrhal (or even bloody) enteritis with liquid, rice water-like or mucoid, malodorous diarrhoea.
Affected pigeons refuse feed and drink more water, resulting in emaciation and debility. Young birds in particular sometimes succumb so severely that the entire intestinal tract is involved and the soft or aqueous faeces is mixed with blood.
  • Recognition of the disease:
Hexamitae are demonstrated via microscopic examination in body-temperature smears from the intestinal mucosa of a recently killed, acutely affected pigeon. With extremely severe infestation, it is also possible to demonstrate the parasites in a cloacal swab from a live bird. They can be recognised from their characteristically rapid movements in a straight line – in contrast to trichomonads, which exhibit slow, circular movements around their own axis.

We would recommend treating all breeding stock 10-14 days before mating. This can be followed by 3 days of Harkavit (multivitamins) in the water. Race birds can be treated again before racing commences.

It isn`t advisable to treat young birds at weaning with 3in1, but half a tablet of Spartrix for Canker can be given if necessary. Worms and Coccidiosis are not usually passed directly from the parent stock.

3 in 1 tablets can be effective for up to 8 weeks but this can depend on the loft enviroment as some suffer with worms, coccidiosis and canker more than others. In such cases the birds need to be treated on a more regular basis especially during the racing season.

Individual medications like Spartrix for Canker, Coxitabs for Coccidiosis or Harkaverm for worms can be used for specific problems.

It is advisable to follow all treatments with a course of Harkavit in the drinking water. The use of Loft Treatment (dry disinfectant) around the nesting and perching areas will reduce the risk of further infection.
